Civic Association of Iranian Canadians (Civic IC)

The Civic Association of Iranian-Canadians (Civic IC) is pleased to hear of the new public policy that is to apply to certain families of victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in obtaining permanent resident status. On May 12 Honourable Marco Mendicino, Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that the government has put in place a new program to assist in-Canada families of victims of these tragedies in obtaining permanent resident status.

Accordingly, this policy allows family members of victims who were Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or foreign nationals and were found eligible for permanent residency to apply for permanent resident status if they currently reside in Canada or if they have somehow lost their status in Canada.  The policy will remain in effect until May 11, 2022.

The Civic IC is also pleased to hear that the IRCC is extending the original temporary residence public policy for families of victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752. This will allow the individuals who were initially issued temporary resident visas following the disaster, but who did not travel, to continue to benefit from specialized assistance and come to Canada if they wish to.

Given the large loss of Canadian life aboard these flights, the Civic IC supports this undertaking and praises Canada’s ongoing and wide-ranging support for the victims of these tragedies. This new pathway to permanent residence will be help families in coping with the loss of their loved ones and building their lives in Canada.

We ask the Canadian government to continue its support for victims' families, and to remain steadfast in seeking justice and accountability for those responsible for the tragic demise of so many Iranian-Canadian lives abord Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752

Promising Practices in Accessing Virtual Mental Health: Supporting Refugees during COVID-19

Promising Practices in Accessing Virtual Mental Health: Supporting Refugees during COVID-19

The COVID pandemic can affect immigrant and refugee well-being in multiple ways. For example

1) Increased stress and anxiety because of isolation and economic stress

2) Worries about the illness itself

3) Changes in access to emotional and social support for those already receiving services.

This added stress may motivate people to seek out formal support for their emotional and social well-being. With COVID, many emotional and social supports have been offered on the computer or by phone. The goal of this project is to identify benefits and challenges in on-line or phone based formal (agency or professional) emotional and social well-being support for refugees.

We will develop guidelines for supporting refugee newcomers to access these supports. Although developed for refugees, these recommendations will be helpful for many Canadians who are trying to access on-line formal emotional and social support.

  • Are you 18 years of age or older?

  • Did you come to Canada as a Resettled Refugee or Refugee Claimant?

  • Have you been in Canada for less than 5 years?

  • Do you live in one of the following provinces: British Columbia (BC), Alberta (AB), Ontario (ON) or Quebec (QC)?

  • Are you

  • fluent in one of the following languages Arabic, English, French, Farsi, Tigrinya or Spanish?

  • Do you or a family member have personal experience with using formal emotional or social well-being support?

  • Do you have access to internet and a computer or a phone?

If you answered YES to these questions, you may be eligible to participate in a research study.

  • All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential.

  • Eligible candidates will be invited to participate in a one-hour virtual interview by computer or phone. You will be paid $30 for your time.

  • If you are interested in participating, please contact us: E-mail: annaoda@yorku.c

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Greeting message for Nowruz to Civic Asociation of Iranian Canadians and Iranian-Canadian Community

March 20, 2021

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to the members of the Civic Association of Iranian Canadians as you celebrate Nowruz.

Nowruz marks the beginning of spring and the New Year in the Persian calendar. To celebrate this occasion, family and friends would normally gather around the haftseen table to share festive meals, exchange gifts, and reflect on the past year.

While this year’s festivities will certainly look different as we continue to follow public health guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19, this occasion still offers a wonderful opportunity to exchange warm wishes, give thanks for one’s blessings and look to the year ahead with optimism and hope. For all Canadians, it is a chance to honour the many communities that observe Nowruz and their important contributions to our country.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone celebrating all the best in the year ahead.

"Har Ruz-etan Nowrouz, Nowruz-etan Pyrouz."

Yours sincerely,

The Rt. Hon. Justin P. J. Trudeau, P.C., M.P.

Prime Minister of Canada

Equal Citizenship

The Civic Association of Iranian Canadians and the BC Civil Liberties Association present:

Equal Citizenship: No More Second-Class Citizens!

In 2014, the government passed a law creating two tiers of Canadian citizens. This law made some Canadians into second class citizens, with fewer rights than other Canadians just because of where they were born. A bill to repeal this discriminatory law – Bill C-6 – is currently being debated by the Canadian Senate.

Join us for a discussion featuring the BC Civil Liberties Association’s Executive Director, Josh Paterson, to talk about citizenship equality and your rights as a Canadian citizen.

Farsi translations of the BCCLA’s Citizenship Handbook will also be available.

When: Saturday, April 8, 2017, 2pm – 4pm

Where: West Vancouver Memorial Library (1950 Marine Dr, West Vancouver, BC)

Premier Christy Clark statement on Nowruz

Premier Christy Clark statement on Nowruz:

“For over 3,000 years, people have gathered together around the Haft Seen, and the fire to celebrate Nowruz – the new year and the beginning of spring.

“From ancient origins, Nowruz is a unifying force, crossing boundaries of religion, and culture. It is celebrated by millions of people in dozens of countries around the world as time of renewal and rejuvenation. Friends and families gather around the traditional haft-seen table to share meals, gifts and ring in the new year with each other. Celebrations also include jumping over bonfires, a symbolic purification ritual.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, I wish everyone celebrating Nowruz health, happiness and success in the coming year.”
